Introduction

The XXL workshop is concerned with the design, computation, engineering, and production of a horizontal large span building. Working in multidisciplinary teams, students design a large-span building usually of about 80-100 meters or larger. Specialists in large-span buildings design contribute by giving lectures and consultations to the students.

XXL is organised in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture (clusters Building Technology, Real Estate & Housing, Architecture) at Delft University of Technology.

  • Building Technology students (free choice and/or alternative to Extreme)
  • Architecture students (free choice)
  • Real estate and housing students (free choice)
  • Geomatics students (free choice)

Project info XXL 2015

The design project in 2015 focuses on a large span structure for an indoor ski-centre and multifunctional snow and ice leisure experiences: the Arctic World Resort in Almere (The Netherlands).
This design process is done as a collaborative digital design in a multidisciplinary group of students in which each student has his/her own different responsibility. The collaborative digital design requires an integrated 3D approach with BIM (Building Information Modelling), performance analysis, and file to factory processes.
The main ambition of the project this year relays on designing a unique and comprehensive indoor snow resort, providing open-air impression and an ever changing environment. The main challenge is to achieve this goal in an economically feasible and environmental sustainable way, with specific attention for a winning business model and energy efficiency by means of passive and active strategies. Large attention should be given to a good integration in the overall context of Almere; and on the iconic value that the project should have. The overall project includes a snow-concept for a new unique set of indoor snow and ice leisure activities and a range of additional facilities.

Location

The Artic World Resort will be located in Almere, The Netherlands – as part of the Almere Poort, the most western located part of the city. The specific plot is located in the area between the railway and the A6, as part of the plan development for Almere Poort East (roughly the part of Almere Poort, east of the railway). The location is quite strategically chosen to also highlight the potentials of very iconic projects. The plot is a triangular surface of approximately 65.000 square meters.

The snow concept

The snow-concept consists of a combination of the Arctic World play-areas and the Alps.
The Arctic World play-areas comprise an extensively themed arctic landscape including a snow mobile circuit, a real snow igloo village, and other items offering ‘instant fun’ activity on real snow and ice and edutainment.
The Alps features a complete winter sports experience; it is a fully equipped sport area, which targets all ages and levels of skiers and snow-boarders; it is intended as a real indoor winter sports resort for skiing and snowboarding with a variety of opportunities for additional sports, leisure and entertainment activities.

Additional facilities

Additional facilities are incorporated in the project, which is configured as mixed use buildings. This aspect can be developed also in symbiosis with the surrounding areas in the Almere Poort. The overall system should work in synergy with the snow-concept, especially regarding the use of energy. The facilities may include a variety of functions, including e.g. parking, technical installations, slides, hotel, apartments, retail, FEC, indoor water park, health & fitness, wellness and spa, and additional amusement, attractions and entertainment, wave surfing and theming, and/or other eventual functions.

Project info XXL 2014

The design project of XXL2014 focuses on a large span structure for an indoor ski-centre and multifunctional snow and ice leisure experiences: the Arctic World Resort in Orlando (Florida). The main ambition of the project relays on designing the most unique and comprehensive indoor snow resort in the world, providing open-air impression and an ever changing environment. The main challenge is to achieve this goal in a sustainable way, with specific attention for energy efficiency by means of passive and active strategies.
The overall project includes a snow-concept for a new unique set of indoor snow and ice leisure activities and a range of additional facilities.

Location

The Artic World Resort will be located in Orlando, Florida – as part of the International Drive (I-Drive). The
I-Drive is a world-wide well know destination for entertainment. The specific plot is located between the
Festival Bay mall (an 80.000 sqm. mall including shops and entertainments) and Tangelo Park.

The snow concept

The snow-concept consists of a combination of the Arctic World and the Alps, it is meant to cover approximately 50.000 m2. The Arctic World comprises an extensively themed arctic landscape including a snow mobile circuit, a real snow igloo village, and other items offering ‘instant fun’ activity on real snow and ice and edutainment. The Alps intends to offer a learning and training opportunity changing over time, in order to stimulate recurrent visits. A patented multidimensional snow slope is included, which satisfies riders of different levels; attractions and fun-park for skiers and snowboarders from beginners to advanced, as well as a ski jumping ride are also included.

Additional facilities

Additional facilities are incorporated in the project, which is configured as mixed use buildings. Additional facilities may be located under the slopes. Some of the additional facilities may include heat exchange with the snow environment. Examples of such facilities are indoor swimming-pools, spa, wellness, etc. These are functions in which the heat generated from the cooling is applied to supply needs for heating, such as to heat the pools. The overall goal is saving energy. Additionally, the project could be serviced by its own energy plant on natural gas, bio-mass or solar and wind energy.
