Additive manufacturing is a rapidly evolving manufacturing technique which finds new applications in a range of industries. The capability of generating complex forms in a range of materials opens new possibilities in design and engineering. Key developments can be found in the field of print materials. This can range from metal, to wax, from plastics to glass. Combinations of materials become available like carbon reinforced co polyester. Engineered to enhance the strength of the material. This development is driven by a demand for new application of the additive manufacturing techniques in new fields of industry.
In Architecture we see a development in the direction of larger scale printing . Concrete printing is developed at many Universities in a search for an efficient low cost additive manufacturing system.
What ever the application the specific properties of the manufacturing process will influence the design process. A formal rationalization process might be needed to cope with manufacturing time of the individual additive manufactured components.
